New Orleans photographer Sherwood Cox first became interested
in photography when he was designing and building furniture
and architectural millworks. While trying to create a catalog
featuring some of his work, he realized a lot more was involved
in capturing the image than just pointing and shooting. “It
captured my imagination and I was challenged by it,” he
said, so he began researching and experimenting.
Cox’s interest in designing and building interior spaces
and architectural details fueled his passion for architectural
photography. His images mirror his solid understanding of both.
“I like well designed and decorated spaces,” he
said. He has since expanded his range of subjects to include
people, landscapes and still life.
Cox has become increasingly interested in capturing the essence
of a person through environmental portraiture. “Taking
a portrait is one thing, but when you capture an individual’s
personality and their favorite surroundings, then the portrait
communicates their passion. It tells the story of that person’s
life.”
In whatever he shoots, Cox pays meticulous attention to details
such as lighting. “As important as composition and styling
are, the lighting must be kept in proper perspective or else
you risk losing what the designer or architect intended you
to see,” he said. “Respecting the balance of light
and shade and retaining their original patterns are key.”
Never lacking inspiration or ideas, Cox has skillfully captured
an infinite range of works on film and digitally. Most recently,
his photos have appeared in renowned fashion publication Women’s
Wear Daily, as well as in New Orleans-based publications The
Times Picayune, St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans Homes &
Lifestyles, and various marketing brochures and advertisements.
Cox is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers
(ASMP).
